The 2003 hatch was the biggest we have had in decades. We can expect walleyes from that hatch to be 19-22 inches this year. There are still strong contributions from the 1999 and 2001 hatches as well. Large walleye from the hatches in the 80's and mid-90's are still out there providing an opportunity to get yourself a " Fish Ohio" trophy (more than 28 inches).
Smallmouth bass this year will range in size from 14-21 inches and weigh 1 1/2 to 5 lbs. ODNR biologists have seen several good hatches in recent years. 2001 and 2003 were great smallmouth hatches.
This year perch anglers can expect a lot of 8-11 inch fish from the 2003 hatch. The strong 2001 hatch will continue to provide the 10-13 inch jumbo perch.
Steelhead anglers
should enjoy great fishing in Lake Erie tributaries throughout the fall,
winter and spring months. Good fishing opportunities will also exist on the
open lake!
Peak steelhead can be found offshore from June through August with catches
between 17-29 inches.
This years white bass catch will include many 10 - 15 inch fish from the 2005 and 2003 hatches. Anglers should focus on the major western basin tributaries during May and June and the near shore areas of the open lake during the summer months.
